Paper Toling
ABOUT THE CRAFT

Paper tole is the art of creating a 3 dimensional picture from a 2 dimensional print.  This is done by using numerous cut-outs taken from 6-10 copies of the same print, depending on the detail in the picture.  Certain parts of different prints of an identical picture would be cut out, the edges coloured so that no "white" shows, and then the piece would be hand shaped, or sculpted.  This finished piece is then glued onto the base print.  The picture is broken into 3 areas:  the background, the middle ground and the foreground, with the work beginning in the background.  This is the premise used in building your picture.  The depth, contour and perception must be kept in perspective, pereserving the natural lines of the picture.

Precision cutting, rounded and coloured edges, and realistic shaping totally enhance the finished product, turning a nice picture into a work of art.  The silicone glue used in building your picture should not be visible anywhere.  A clear coating can also be applied to certain areas in your picture to give it another type of look.

This art/craft medium began in the United States in the early 1900's and made its way into Canada in the 1960's.  It became extremely popular in the 1970's for a number of years.  It began to wane in the late 1990's, however, interest in this artform has been rekindled, and is  now more popular than ever.
